Back Pain & Sciatica treatment in aylsham

Back pain making everyday life harder than it should be?

.........................................................

Perhaps it's that familiar ache when you get out of bed. A sharp pain when you bend down. Or discomfort travelling into your leg that makes sitting, walking or sleeping difficult.

Sometimes you know exactly what started it. Other times, the pain seems to have appeared from nowhere. And when it doesn't settle, it's natural to wonder what's actually going on.

At Bure Valley Osteopaths, we take the time to listen, assess your symptoms and explore what might be contributing to your pain. We'll explain our findings clearly and discuss appropriate treatment and practical ways to help you manage your symptoms.

What might be causing your back pain?

Back pain isn't always about one specific injury. Sometimes it develops gradually, while other times it starts suddenly after lifting, bending or even something as simple as getting out of bed.

There are several possible causes, including muscle or joint problems, disc-related conditions and irritation of the nerves in your lower back.

Sciatica can cause pain that travels from your lower back or buttock into your leg, sometimes accompanied by tinging, numbness or weakness.

But here's the important thing: not all back pain is the same, and neither is the treatment.

That's why a thorough assessment matters. Rather than simply treating where is hurts, we'll look at your symptoms, movement and medical history to help identify what may be contributing to your pain.

How can Osteopathy help with back pain & Sciatica

..............................................

When your back hurts, it's tempting to focus entirely on where you feel the pain. But the painful area doesn't always tell us the whole story.

At Bure Valley Osteopaths in Aylsham, we take the time to investigate what's causing your symptoms, rather than simply treating where it hurts.

Osteopaths are trained to assess and diagnose a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including sciatica.

Sciatica isn't a diagnosis of what's causing the problem. It describes symptoms associated with irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that contribute to it. The underlying cause might be a disc problem, narrowing around a spinal nerve or another condition affecting the surrounding structures.

By taking a detailed medical history and carrying out a thorough physical and neurological examination, we can often identify the likely source of your symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Depending on your diagnosis, osteopathic treatment may include:

  • Hands-on treatment to help improve joint mobility and reduce muscular tension.
  • Joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques to encourage more comfortable movement.
  • Targeted rehabilitation exercises to improve strength, mobility and function.
  • Practical advice to help you manage your symptoms and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Many cases of back pain and sciatica can be managed conservatively, and osteopathic treatment may form part of that approach.

Where necessary, we'll also recognise when further investigations or referral to another healthcare professional are appropriate.

Our aim is to identify what's causing your pain, explain our findings clearly and provide treatment that's tailored to you — not simply offer a temporary fix.

What happens at your first appointment?

If you're struggling with back pain or sciatica, you probably want answers to two questions: What's causing it, and what can be done about it?

That's exactly where we start.

Your first appointment at Bure Valley Osteopaths in Aylsham lasts approximately 50 minutes, giving us time to understand your symptoms and carry out a thorough assessment.

We'll discuss your medical history, how your pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it's affecting your everyday life.

We'll then examine your movement, muscles, joints and, where appropriate, carry out neurological tests to help identify the likely cause.

We'll explain what we find in plain English, discuss your treatment options and answer any questions you may have.

If osteopathic treatment is appropriate, we can usually begin treatment during your first appointment. You'll also receive practical advice on managing your symptoms and what to expect as you recover.

Whether it's back pain, neck pain or a persistent niggle,

we'll assess your symptoms,

explain what might be causing them and help you move forward.

Gemma has worked wonders on my shoulder. I'd had pain for years after a nursing injury and thought I would have to "live" with it. Treatments with Gemma have improved things no doubt, and I'm able to do so many things I couldn't do before.

Kathryn

I am a keen amateur golfer and had lower back pain coupled with a calf injury. Gemma treated both problems and as a result I have now made a full recovery. Gemma also performed acupuncture on my calf. This was a painless experience which I highly recommend.

Stephen

Gemma has not only got me out of pain but her knowledge is outstanding. She really explained what was going on with my back, plus gave me some invaluable advice in how to stop the pain returning.
